1955-58  Cambridge University, St John&s College. B.A. in architecture.

1958-61  Polytechnic, Regent Street, London. Diploma in architecture.

1960        Architectural Association, London. Lecture course in tropical design.

1961-70  Qualified as registered architect. Architectural practice.

1964        Cambridge University M.A. in architecture.

1969-80  Postgraduate studies at University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies. Studied Ottoman Turkish, Persian, and Russian.

1970-80  Taught architecture at Oxford Polytechnic.

1980        University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies, Faculty of Arts, Ph.D.

1980-05  Continued specialisation in Islamic architecture with a series of articles on India and Pakistan, with

reference to influences from Iran and central Asia; also with work on symbolism in seminars.

1981-86  University of Cologne, Institute of Ethnology: work for Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East.

1987-89  University of Heidelberg, South Asia Institute: village survey in northern Pakistan.

1989-90  University of Cologne: resumed work for Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East.

1990-91  University of Bamberg. Endowed professorship for Islamic Art and Archaeology, grade C 4.

1991-92  University of Cologne: continued work for Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East.

1992-97  University of Bonn, Central Asian Seminar ¿ University of Bamberg, Turkology: research.
